Dr. John's post
With just a couple days to go, we are feverishly working on the final intinerary and scheduling details for our trip to the DOminican Republic and Haiti. It promises to be a very fulfilling mission. We will be working in the poorest slums to be found in the Western Hemishpere including "Cite Soleil" near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. We are also spending time in many of the "tent cities" that are found throughout the earthquake-devastated areas.
It is astounding that three quarters of all AIDS in the Caribbean are found in these two countries that are on the big island called Hispaniola. What is truly sad is that 50% of all new HIV cases are occurring among 12-24 year olds in this area. What was once an adult viral disease, has now become a youth pandemic.
There is no cure- no vaccine- that can prevent HIV/AIDS the only vaccine is prevention education- which is what TeenAIDS specializes in. We do "AIDS Attacks" on the streets, in the school yards, on the sports fields, in the marketplaces - wherever young people gather. Our form of grassroots outreach is very proactive and aggressive. I do not want to see any more teen lives lost to HIV/AIDS
Tomorrow's blog will talk about where we will be going in both countries.
